HOUSTON, TX — April 6, 2006 — SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Center, a non-profit organization founded in 1983 to improve quality of life for people with disabilities using horseback riding and related activities, has received a $100,000 grant as the winner of the 2006 Houston Benefits award, funded by Humana, one of the largest providers of health insurance and related benefits in Houston.
Announcement of the grant was made by Pattie Dale Tye, president of Humana of Houston, during the Houston Benefits Ceremony of Giving Thursday at the Old Rice Hotel. Three other finalists for the award – The Arbor School, Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Harris County and Talento Bilingue de Houston – each received a $10,000 donation from Humana.
SIRE will use the $100,000 grant to construct a covered arena on its 37-acre campus located in Spring, the northern Houston suburb. A covered arena will allow the organization to serve more clients, host more training clinics, expands its summer camps and increase horse training time. The organization expects to double the number of clients served and greatly increase capacity.
SIRE provides services that benefit clients in many different ways including improved muscle tone, gross and fine motor skills, balance, posture, coordination, motor development and range of motion. For individuals with impaired mobility, horseback riding rhythmically moves the body in a manner that simulates in the rider, the human walking gait.
“While SIRE is a leader in the therapeutic riding industry providing services to more than 180 client riders, the majority of them children, it is a very small portion of the total population in Houston with disabilities,” said Jimm Williams, executive director of SIRE. “SIRE constantly has a waiting list with many candidates waiting six months to a year to receive the benefits that horse riding therapy can provide.”
“We are extremely grateful to Humana for this generous contribution,” Williams said. “The covered arena will allow us to expand our riding skills classes to operate at maximum capacity and provide services even in inclement weather.” Williams said the funds will allow SIRE to begin construction on the covered arena immediately with completion by the end of 2006.
A panel of local judges, comprised of community leaders, public officials and business representatives, worked with Humana to select SIRE from among the four finalists in a competition that garnered 87 entries from area non-profit organizations.
“I am very impressed with the quality of entries we received for Houston Benefits and the variety of good work happening in our community,” said Pattie Dale Tye.
"Humana created Houston Benefits to fulfill its commitment as a corporate citizen to enhance the quality of life and support local organizations that contribute so greatly to the well-being of our community," said Tye. "Now in its second year, Houston Benefits has proven that charities can achieve remarkable results when supported in a meaningful, focused way." The program is designed to give local not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), charitable organizations the opportunity to receive a one-time infusion of funding to create new programs or transform ongoing activities.
The 12 judges choosing the recipient of the $100,000 grant include Kenneth Wells, medical director of El Paso Corporation; Mark S. Scheid, assistant to the President of Rice University; Greg Nakanishi, senior vice president of Human Resources for Baker Hughes Inc.; Joycelyn Marek, vice president of Marketing and Public Affairs for the Houston Chronicle; Pamela Lovett, senior vice president of Business Development for Sterling Bank; and Cathy Easter, vice president of Community Benefits for The Methodist Hospital.
Also, Richard Easley, senior director of Employee Benefits for Sysco; Wendy Burkeen, director of Public Relations for KHOU-TV, Ch. 11; John Beddow, group publisher for the Houston Business Journal; Virginia Kelly Judd, executive director of the Humana Foundation; Lisa Rowland, vice president of Sales for Humana of Houston; and Pattie Dale Tye, president of Humana of Houston.
Each year, Humana’s Houston Benefits program awards a one-time, $100,000 grant to a different Houston-based 501(c)(3) organization to benefit the Houston metropolitan area. Houston Benefits supports non-profits in the areas of education, community development, arts and culture, as well as health and human services.

Humana - Houston Benefits 2004
Fact Sheet |
| What is Houston Benefits? |
Houston Benefits is the name of Humana of Houston’s charitable giving program in support of worthy causes. Humana will award a one-time $100,000 grant to a Houston-based non-profit organization doing valuable work to benefit people in the community. Humana will celebrate the Houston Benefits winner at an awards ceremony in spring 2005. |
| Why Houston Benefits? |
Houston Benefits represents a new concept in corporate public involvement. Humana is launching the program amid a challenging economy with declines in corporate giving nationwide, which in turn puts added importance on the wise use of corporate charitable contributions.
To meet that challenge, Humana has designed Houston Benefits to provide a meaningful infusion of funding to a non-profit organization, while at the same time allowing Humana to concentrate its charitable giving for greatest impact. A single, large gift has the power to transform a non-profit agency, allowing it to reach milestones that may not otherwise have been possible.
|
| Selection process and criteria |
Humana narrows the field of applicants to four finalists, each with a focus upon either health, education, or civic and cultural development. A panel of judges, comprised of community leaders, public officials and local executives, evaluates presentations from each group and makes a final determination based on established criteria, including:
- The organization’s work must enhance the quality of life in the Houston area.
- The support from Humana is a one-time award. The organization must demonstrate it can sustain the enhanced services or activity that this one-time gift would allow.
- No more than 15% of the contribution can be used to support the group’s administrative costs.
Applications for the 2004 Houston Benefits competition are due December 17, 2004. Guidelines and selection criteria are available at www.houstonbenefits.org. |
